Today I ran into an old friend of mine. Well, a young friend. I met him quite a few years ago when I was working on a helpdesk. He’s doing well, really well. A better job than mine, better clothes, nice car, and he had a certainty about him that I’m pretty sure I don’t have.
Just thinking back to then and looking at him now, it seems that fate/circumstance/the hand of God has helped him along. I don’t mean that in a derogatory way either. He made his own way, but there’s no doubt that there’s a bit of something that went on helping him along the way at major turning points in his life.
I guess we all have that to an extent. It’s just easier to see when you’re on the outside looking in.
I admit, I felt a little jealous. I remember having a talk with him one night at a restaurant adjacent to Western Sydney International Dragway. I spoke of dreams, desires, and chasing them incessantly. Taking in any roadblocks and then side stepping them or barreling through them. Finding that which you love, and chasing after it now and not waiting. How I tend to wait, and I miss opportunities. The joy, excitement, and adrenaline rush received when you achieve that which you set out to achieve. I wonder if he listened to my ramblings that night.
I notice this invisible force that seems to help steer things along with a lot of the people that are very close to me. Whether it be a door opening towards a desired career, or opportunities presenting themselves seemingly out of the blue.
But with this I have also noticed that the person receiving that helping hand has done a significant amount of work towards what will eventually be the pay-off.
What we need to do sometimes is just take hold of that shotgun, barge into that guitar store, and make headway to getting what we want…and if that fails, throw a hadouken at anything standing in the way.
